Weekend Wanderings | 4 Fitness Tips to Jumpstart Your Week

Happy weekend everyone! For most (if not all) of us, the weekends are a time to rest and recharge for the busy week ahead. To aid in this recharge, we figured we’d share a few fitness tips to help you get inspired for the days to come. Whether fitness is a part of your weekly routine, or ranked low on the endless pile of responsibilities- these simple tips will help you take charge of this week…before it even begins!

1) Fighting hunger

If you’re like me, you are constantly feeling hungry. Especially when remaining active, it is hard to balance hunger pangs with healthy eating habits when our bodies are craving more and more nutrients.  Faced with these same problems, a group of scientists from Loughborough University in Britain recently completed a study to find out what types of exercise best suppress hunger. Throughout their experimentation they found that longer workouts accomplished this more effectively than shorter ones, decreasing levels of acylated ghrelin. In fact after a 90-minute run, most of the subjects reported suppressed hunger levels for over an hour after the conclusion of their run.

2) Turn off your alarm

For most, the idea of working out is synonymous with waking up early; an idea that is unpopular to say the least. But according to this article published in The Washington Post, that early morning wakeup call might not be necessary after all. “Research shows that strength and flexibility are greatest in the late afternoon,” writes author Robert J. Davis. He continues to note that “perceived exertion (meaning how hard you feel that your body is working) is lowest” during this same time period.

3) Keep the carbs

There are quite a few 4-letter-words that tend to evoke fear in a lot of people. For us women, one of those is “c a r b”. But according to Fitness magazine, when it comes to gearing up for workout, carbs are your gym BFF.” The magazine suggests grabbing a piece of whole wheat toast with peanut butter and banana slices before a workout, which provides a mix of complex and simple carbs. This way, “the release of energy during your workout is slow and steady throughout your routine.”

4) Don’t go it alone

As girls, we like to do things together. Whether it’s going shopping, getting our nails done, or even just taking a trip to the grocery store; our natural instinct is to invite someone along for the ride. But this article from Daily Burn suggests that if we apply this same philosophy to fitness, we are actually far more motivated to workout on a regular basis. “What will ultimately inspire you to get up and start moving in a strong, supportive community” the article states. And isn’t that the same with life too?!

At the end of the day, your fitness should be tailored to you. Use these tips to help motivate you in the week ahead, but more importantly, work to listen to your body and meet it’s needs. Some days that might mean extending your workout or changing your schedule…and sometimes it means treating yourself to your favorite dessert. As long as you’re loving your body, it will love you right back!
