The full skirt has been around for hundreds of years, but as far as a real understanding of fashion and the woman’s body, the full skirt emerged in a new way in the 1940’s by a visionary designer named Christian Dior.
Christion Dior, a French Designer, was born in 1905 and died in 1957. Even though he had a very short life and a very short career, he delivered fashion designs that are still iconic.
“I wanted my dresses to be constructed, molded upon the curves of the feminine body, whose sweep they would stylize”
Dior was able to give the woman a “New Look” following World War II when everything needed a rebirth. Fashions were a little heavy, rough, dark since it was a period during and after the war.
Dior wanted to define the tiny waist and fuller hips by adding fullness to the skirt. It outlined the curves of a woman’s body and was 12 inches or less from the ground. Dior’s NEW LOOK was adopted everywhere in the world and this LOOK marked the 50’s fashion. The skirt has resurged today with less fullness in the hips, different lengths with a very luxurious and casual look.
