Weekend Wanderings | Book Review | The Light We Lost

Here at SheShe Show, we firmly believe in the power of literature. A good book, no matter what the subject, has an almost supernatural power to change our minds completely through mere words on a page. Whether it’s imagining a world never before considered or empathizing with characters who we grow attached to throughout the course of a novel; the power of a book has the capacity to do so much more than we often give credit for. For these reasons we are starting a “book club” of sorts, a place for us to share our latest finds and invite our readers to do the same. We hope to not only review these books, but create a community for those who share a love for these stories and the desire for them to live on past the final page, through a space of community and discussion.

Book Review

In the Light We Lost by Jill Santopolo, we get a taste of both the immense vulnerability and utter panic resulting from the attacks on September 11th, the uncertainty of young adulthood, the passion of new love- and the intensely powerful combination of all three.

On this fateful day in September our main characters, Lucy and Gabe, meet during the depths of tragedy as they watch the attacks unfold from their neighboring New York university. This encounter both affords their introduction and foreshadows their infinite bond, eventually leading to a chance reunion years down the road.

What happens next is a love story so incessantly powerful that the term “page turner” doesn’t quite do it justice. Santopolo creates short chapters from Lucy’s point of view filled with both clever inner dialogue and detailed descriptions of those around her, including Gabe, and how these individuals become of part of the love story that unfolds. Throughout the novel the concept of love is explored in nearly every sense, both illustrating the different spaces in which it can exist and begging to reader to examine the concept of comparing loves. Through Lucy’s eyes we see how age, maturity, timing and perhaps most importantly, fate, influence love in it’s different capacities.

Perhaps most striking about this book is the reader’s ability to place oneself in the shoes of these characters with such ease and sincerity, truly feeling the what they do and falling blissfully into their world without quite knowing it. As the end of the novel approaches, Lucy is faced with a life-altering decision that turns the “finale” of their story into one brimming with emotion and chaos, felt as deeply by the reader as by the very characters enduring the experience.

The Light We Lost is truly as powerful as it is passionate, the great next romance novel for those yearning for an all-consuming love story to sweep them off their feet.

I just returned from NYC and as I was walking through Midtown on September 11th, 2017 I just happened upon Engine 54 Ladder 4 Battalion 9 fire department. Did you know that they were the first responders on that dreaded day? They lost a whole shift……  I was so emotional as I walked closer and closer. There were memorial reefs and flowers right in front of the station and several firefighters dressed in their dress uniforms visiting and taking photos with many feeling the same way I was. I cannot tell you in words how I felt beyond that moment.

I asked them if I could give them a hug……then the tears came…..I WILL NEVER FORGET!!!
