For the final installment of our Waco series, food is on the agenda and we have our favorite eateries. Whether you’re in the market for a morning latte or a decadent slice of pizza- we have all the best foodie finds listed out just for you. We hope you’ve enjoyed this series, and we encourage you to let us know about your own take on a Waco weekend trip!
Coffee
Before the day begins, most of use are already in need of a cup of coffee. Luckily, Waco is home to an expansive range of coffee shops where Baylor students often reside during the busyness of the semester.
- The most well known, and tourist attracting, spot is Common Grounds. It is an artsy coffee haven located within walking distance of the Baylor campus. Quaint, eclectic and atmosphere-oriented, CG lives up to all it’s hype. Must get: “No Bull.”
- Pinewood Roasters: This is a fairly new spot in Waco, and is home to some of the finest quality coffee in the city. Retro décor, good music and very tasty brews are the specialties here, and is highly recommended for true coffee consumers.
- Dichotomy Coffee & Spirits: One of the best downtown finds in Waco is Dichotomy Coffee & Spirits, located right in the center of Austin Avenue. A bar on one end and a coffee shop on the other, this spot is perfect for a morning kick start or evening relaxation. Enjoy your experience under a beautiful rooftop patio. (Must get: any latte, especially Chai)
Breakfast
On the heels of Chip and Joanna’s announcement of their plans to renovate and reopen a breakfast café, it’s time we spend some time focusing on the most important meal of the day. While the pair hasn’t set a release date yet, Waco has plenty of existing breakfast options to fill the void while we wait…. anxiously.
- Café Cappuccino: Another classic Waco find; Café Capp is the epitome of Texas-sized tastings. Pancakes are often larger than your plate and a killer selection of omelets are overwhelming. You can almost get full from this menu by just looking at it. Must get: gingerbread pancake and breakfast quesadilla.
- Waco Hippodrome: In the heart of downtown lies this hidden gem. The Hippodrome is an old-school movie theatre that comes complete with a spacious upstairs dining area and movie-themed brunch options. While the menu is small, the views make up for it and provide a unique dining experience.

- Lula Jane’s: Arguably the best atmosphere of all the breakfast options is Lula Jane’s. For vegan and gluten-free eaters and for us non-vegan folk, this quaint café is perfect to find unique options. Unlimited coffee, including their popular Bulletproof variety is a big draw. The café posts their daily menus ahead of time on their Facebook page, so make sure you check their daily dishes before you go. Must get: baked oatmeal.
Lunch
An often overlooked meal, lunch in Waco is often substituted for one of the incredible breakfast or dinner options. The city is also home to countless underrated lunch finds, for those of us valuing this midday meal. Lunch lovers, unite!
- Stone Hearth: This brand new Indian café right located next door to Dichotomy is truly my newest obsession. They opened just a few weeks ago, but the customer base is still somewhat reserved by us frequents wanting to keep this hidden gem… hidden. If you’re looking for true Indian food and a quieter environment, we can agree to share this spot. Must get: chicken tikka masala.
- The Mix: Located on Baylor’s campus, this is a small café that serves up classic sandwiches and salads alongside specialty items that keep this place buzzing all day long. Many flock here for their stuffed avocados or pre-made meals, but I swear by the fried cantaloupe sandwich.
- Xristo’s Café: What started out as a temporary dining became a fast Waco favorite for us Greek food lovers. The gyros and feta fries at Xristo’s Café have customers salivating. Now, with the new permanent spot on La Salle Ave, customers are flocking to come see the new brick & mortar version of a food-truck. (Must get: lamb gyro)
Dinner
As a disclaimer, the following options might not be the healthiest choices Waco has to offer, but if you’re looking to eat, drink & be marry during your weekend getaway, these spots will not disappoint. Calories don’t count when you’re having fun…right?
- Shorty’s: There are no shortage of pizza options in Waco, but Shorty’s is by far the best and hosts large crowds. Legendary pizza by the slice, and pints of beer ensure an extended dining experience. Shorty’s is the perfect spot for a casual Italian inspired lunch.
- Try Baris for true Italian options, including pasta with the infamous “pink sauce”. Baris is located on Valley Mills Blvd. (Must get: pepperoni pizza pillow)
- Vitkek’s: For us BBQ lovers, it can often be quite difficult to find authentic barbecue in a new city. The most experienced BBQ eaters will leave impressed by their wide variety of options and quality of their meat. (Must get: “Gut Pak”)
Photo Credit: Twisted Root Burger Co.
- Twisted Root: Originally started in Dallas, this cool burger joint serves up some of the most unique burgers in the state, let alone the small city of Waco. Located in a warehouse of sorts, this spot does have a strange approach on curb appeal. The environment is fun, loud and filled with the heavenly smell of freshly cooked fries. This restaurant is known for it’s unique burgers, including buffalo, ostrich and boar patties. Don’t miss decadent custard shakes as well as a full bar located right in the center of this burger hub-bub. (A must get: “the Verde” or “enough said”)
