Part 3 of the Austin remodel series: The great outdoors is such a gift to us as humans. There is so much to see and learn from natural scapes and wildlife. This home we purchased and sold within a 4 year period brought up so much enjoyment. So many times enjoying the wide variety of birds that would hang in our back yard. Of course we had 3 bird feeders, the biggest problem was keeping the squirrels out of them. Deer would stroll freely through our place gazing curiously at us. They were not sure, but new we were ok because we fed them too. At one point we had some of those pesky wild hogs that would dig up our yard, so we moved our deer feeders away from the house and they went away. We also saw a fox or two…..they are fairly timid around humans.
During this 4 years Bee Creek stayed mostly semi dry. We had a really cool 6′ swimming hole that had a few small fish in it. When it got really dry, Norman would take the water hose from the well and keep the hole full of water so the fish would not die. Now, for the first time in 9 years the drought in Texas has broken and there is ample water in Bee Creek and Lake Travis. All of the land owners on Lake Travis that lost their lake front property due to the drought now have their lakefront property back.
Fortunately, the previous owners had done some nice terraces and patios, they just needed to be freshened up. The pool needed to be re-surfaced and I cleaned up and painted the pool house. We added flagstone decking around the pool and the other terraces. Norman wanted a fire pit, so we put it down the hill where there is a great view of the creek. We also added a horse shoe pit in the same area. In the end of it all, the outdoor living areas became our favorite place to hang out.
So…..why did we go to all of the effort and expense on this home, just to turn around and sell it? Well….good question……You know, we work work work to get, get, get to then realize that is was more of a burden for the little amount of time that we were able to go there. Every time we went, there was something that needed attention, so I would have to sit around and wait on contractors. That property really needed a full time resident to give it the TLC that it deserved. Even though it was a very special place, simplifying our life is what really sounded good to us. Believe me when I tell you, that we have more to do to simplify our lives, but we made the first step and it feels good.
