It is still winter everywhere, but the transitional season between winter and spring is right on our heels, especially here in Houston. So, today we are bringing you some of my favorite blanket scarves and ruanas (wraps) that are perfect for this transition period and all kinds of climates throughout the year.
The Wrap or Ruana
Anyone know what a “ruana” is? Well, I can honestly tell you that I was not familiar with this term until a few years ago, even though I have been in the fashion industry for 35+ years. As written in the encyclopedia a “ruana” is a poncho style outer garment that is basically a thick soft and sleeveless square or rectangular blanket with an opening in the center for the head to go through with a slit down the front to the hem. The “ruana” is typical of the Andes region of Venezuela and Columbia. The word “ruana” comes from the Chibcha meaning “Land of Blankets”, used to refer the woolen fabrics manufactured by the natives and well suited to the cold temperatures of these regions. They were also used as a blanket for use in bed or to sit on a cushion of sorts.
Never a mistake to add one or more “ruana’s” to your wardrobe.

The Blanket Scarf
I love the blanket scarf because of it’s size. It is like an article of clothing but much more versatile. Most blanket scarves are of a woven material and are large and square…..about 40″ square or larger. This size gives us the opportunity to style in several ways. Three ways that I most often use my blanket scarves for are:
- Wear as I have worn here in these photos. Fold the scarf into a triangle, then wrap around your shoulders tying off centered slightly with the two pointed ends. Just loop them one over the other and make sure the fabric scarf covers your shoulders like a wrap.
- Another creative way to wear your blanket scarf is to fold into a square, then wrap the scarf around your waist like a skirt, tying the two pointed ends just above your left hip. Make sure the third point, points down your left leg. It should look like an asymmetrical skirt. Wear it over leggings or a narrow skirt. You can add a belt over it at the waist for added styling.
- The blanket scarf is also useful when traveling whether in the car, boat or airplane. You can never be sure what the temps will be like, so it is always nice to have a little something extra for added comfort.
