The Tartan plaid fabric that is most often worn in the winter months and Christmas holidays have been around for a few centuries dating back to the Scotish. This print has easily become my favorite winter print, so today we have rounded up plenty of plaids for you to fall in love with.
Did you know that there is a difference between Tartan and Plaid? A plaid is a woven fabric which utilizes different colored yarns that cross over each other in order to create the blocky, linear pattern we all know. “Tartan” however, refers to very specific types of Scottish plaids (differentiated by certain colors and patterns) that are imbued with meaning and history.
Historical Timeline of the Tartan print
8th Century BC to 1745
- This fabric dates as far back to the 8th Century BC when it became a symbol of Sottish power and that is a long time ago.
- In the 1500s the Tartan plaid started to trend when the British manufacturers took the print and made it work for their market. No longer a symbolic symbol, but it did become a luxury fabric and you would often see it on royalty and nobility.
- During the Scottish Rebellion of 1745, tartan was used in the uniforms of the leading Scottish military troop, The Royal Highland Regiment, or the Black Watch. The green and dark blue patterns became strongly associated with rebellion, and after the defeat of Scottish forces plaids were banned from Britain for a considerable amount of time.
19th to Present
- In the 19th century, plaid made its way into the United States thanks to the Scottish. Finding their new home in America they brought the plaid with them where you now see this print in home goods as well as clothing.
- Later in the early 1900s, Woolrich and Pendleton began making men’s shirts that were a staple in the workplace.
- By 1949 women caught on and got their own version of the plaid again thanks to Pendleton.
- Today, we see it in fashion and interiors all across the board where we see it in evening wear, grunge style, napkins, blankets, furniture, hats, handbags, boots, blazers and more. The Tartan plaid for me is also a symbol that the holidays are here.
