Dec My Room started by my friend Susan Plank and her daughter Kendall in 2007. Today with several fundraisers a year they are helping the lives of children while they are in an extended stay at hospitals in the all famous medical center of Houston, Texas and around the country.
Below are photos of last years “Loves In Fashion” event/fundraiser held at the upscale ladies boutique Tootsies/Houston and the fall “Let’s Do Lunch” held at RDG + Bar Annie. Please enjoy and learn about Dec My Room at the end of this post.
Fashionista’s, socialites, pro athletes past and present and more walked the runway in beautiful designer fashions. Did you recognize some of the famous faces in the above photos? Just a few were Ray and Kara Childress(former Oilers ), Michael and Lisa Holthouse, Mr and Mrs Chester Pits, our weather girl Chita Johnson and her fiance,Lane Craft, Lara Bell and not to forget Debbie and Roger Clemons, the Texans Cheerleaders and their mascot “Toro”. DEC MY ROOM
At only 11 years old, Kendall Plank, daughter of Susan and Mike Plank, created the first healing place by decorating a family friend’s hospital room. It was such a joy for Kendall to experience helping her friend feel less anxious an unsure by just making his room more like home. She then saw the big picture and told her mom that she wanted to do the same thing for all children that had to be in the hospital for a long time.
Susan, being the more mature and experienced one helped Kendall propel this idea into the global and sustainable organization that it is today. When asked about Dec My Room, Susan says, “It’s all about the kids!” She works with Courtney Barta, Kathy French and her board of directors to grow the organization. There are currently 7 Dec Affiliate Hospitals and more in the works.
Are you looking for a way to be fulfilled, meet new friends, use your decorating skills and help a child have a better experience while in the hospital? Well then maybe think about being a volunteer. You will be trained on how to enrich the child’s room with their favorite colors and cool themes. With a $300 budget and some guidance, you can create an amazing living space in just 3 days. It actually becomes an extension of the healthcare that the patient receives. If you don’t have time to shop and decorate, then think about making a donation or attending one of the awesome fundraisers held during the year.
Once again you can join me watch a lot of celebrities strut their stuff down the runway at Loves In Fashion on February 10th at Tootsies upscale boutique. Click here to purchase your tickets.
