How to Transition Seasons With Closet Basics

Today we are talking about how to transition seasons with closet basics. Here in Houston in the spring time and fall we never know from one day to the next what the weather is going to be like. One day it could be 85 degrees and the next day 55 degrees, One thing I have learned is to keep a few basics that can transition the seasons. Pieces that I can go to the grocery store, hair salon, nails, just a casual lunch with a friend or even travel by plane or car are key and certainly my go to pieces in my wardrobe. I love them because I can restyle them over and over to give them a different look. No they are not bold and colorful, but every now and then even a die hard color story can do neutrals. It’s kind of like resetting for me.

These are a few basics to add to your wardrobe if you don’t already have them. Maybe they are tucked way back in the closet somewhere. First of all invest in a cardigan. You guys that have been reading my blog for a while know that I luvvvvv cardigans. They just work in every wardrobe in just about every climate. Air conditioning even constitutes a wrap sometimes. If you are in need of a new one then I have created little Look Books of a few of my favs below. I especially love the Barefoot Dreams line like the cardi that I am wearing. It is soooo soft, that you will not want to take it off.

T Shirts are a must have essential for all of us. If you haven’t purchased a new white one in a few years, then you might want to think about ditching it and get a new one. White gets dingy and stained over a very short time. Below are a few of my favorite 3/4 sleeve t shirts. Lilla P, Splendid, Eileen Fisher and Carlson have really great T’s. Banana Republic has a short sleeve T that comes in like 9 different colors. Just click on the photos below and it will take you to the websites and you can shop as you normally would.

You know I talk about denim a lot, Well, it’s because denim is the sweetheart of world apparel. Last week, I talked about the newest hemlines on denim. For a good summer denim, be sure to get a crop jean be a flare crop, a boyfriend crop, white denim, or destroyed. I will say if you have wrinkly knees then don’t do a destroyed jean that has a hole over the knee. All of that loose skin or fat will bulge right through. You can still find a destroyed denim without the knee open. Am I right??? Yes, I am. My jeans today have one knee out, so it isn’t too ugly. This is all based on an individual basis.

When we say the we can wear what we want to wear at over 40, 50, 60 + ….that is true, but make sure your are putting your best assets forward, not your worst ones!! Make good choices!! I have selected 10 cropped denim jeans, but after you click through you can cruise around the website to see if there are some other brands that you like better. Just remember to check the fit, the rise, the knees and of course compare the price. There are so many great brands that look amazing that are under $150. There are a couple of brands that I don’t mind paying more for because I love their style but better yet, the fit!!

This year more than any other year, suede is carrying on into spring and summer. Another example, that all the old rules of fashion are no longer valid. We would have never worn suede in the summer when I was growing up.

We are still seeing the lace up trend, a spring suede bootie, wedge style and the biggest trend is the block heel. We still love the stiletto, but so many more comfortable options that are so cute!  Below are some classic neutral basics that we love.

One last think to think about when styling these items….going from winter to spring, lighten up your shoes and accessories. Going from Summer to Fall then you can choose a closed toe shoe or wear a short suede bootie. Even an over the knee boot would look great. You might put a black t shirt under the cardigan instead of white.
