Weekend Wanderings | Books You Should Read Before 2019

Every year, my New Year’s resolution involves the goal to read more. And while I have been somewhat successful in my pursuit of a larger bookshelf collection this year, it seems that I can never catch up with the growing amount of books I want to read. From personal memoirs to gripping thrillers–the options are endless, but today we wanted to help make this choice a little easier. We’re walking through 6 books we want to read before 2019…and you should too!

The Woman in the Window, A.J. Finn

Obsessed (like me) with movies like Gone Girl or The Girl On The Train? This thriller is alllll the rage right now for mystery and suspense lovers. “A twisty, powerful Hitchcockian thriller about an agoraphobic woman who believes she witnessed a crime in a neighboring house” is the novel’s summary–and if that isn’t compelling, I’m not sure what is. Plus, this book has already been repurposed into a movie headed towards box offices around the country!

The Intermission, Elyssa Friedland

I’m reading this one right now and truly can’t put it down. Friedland tells the story of a married couple who faces stagnation and lack of romance, combined with the pressure to start a family and the woes of unemployment. So the couple decides to embark on an intermission, or “a six-month separation during which they’ll decide if the comfortable life they’ve built together is still the one they both want.” The results, quite frankly, are what make this book so hard to put down.

WorkParty, Jaclyn Johnson

If you’ve ever found yourself uninspired at work, under-appreciated by your boss, or ready to drop everything for your side hustle–you need to read this book. Jaclyn Johnson, CEO of Create & Cultivate, “shows she how she turned distrust into determination, frustration into fuel, and heartache into hard work—and how you can, too.” This book is a super easy read, and is perfect to refuel for the year to come.

The Immortalists, Chloe Benjamin

“It’s 1969 in New York City’s Lower East Side, and word has spread of the arrival of a mystical woman, a traveling psychic who claims to be able to tell anyone the day they will die. The Gold children—four adolescents on the cusp of self-awareness—sneak out to hear their fortunes.” What comes next is a story of family bonds, mystical beliefs, and a whole new world of untapped adventure. This book came out last January and has been on my list ever since…and I am determined to tackle it before 2019!

Educated: A Memoir, Tara Westover

I’ve only heard great things about this memoir from Tara Westover. “Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, Westover was seventeen the first time she set foot in a classroom. When another brother got himself into college, Tara decided to try a new kind of life. Her quest for knowledge transformed her…” which she explains through the gripping pages that follow. For anyone with an interest in education or family dynamics, this might be your next read.

Girl Wash Your Face, Rachel Hollis

My last pick is one that I feel strongly about, as a listener to Hollis’ podcast “RISE.” Hollis has a way of instilling self-confidence with her words each week and has done the same in the pages of this story. ” In this challenging and inspiring new book, Rachel exposes the twenty lies and misconceptions that too often hold us back from living joyfully and productively, lies we’ve told ourselves so often we don’t even hear them anymore.” This book is another perfect start to 2019, and a perfect gift for the important women in your life.
