About a month ago, I went home to Maryville, Tennessee to visit my mother and sisters. While there, I went out sightseeing on my sister’s very nice boat on Tellico Lake. There are many great lakes in East Tennessee which makes for great summertime recreation in the area. I enjoyed the scenery so much!! I had forgotten about all of the cool railroad trestles located all around. Growing up I just did not appreciate that raw architectural beauty of these older steel bridges.
A trestle (sometimes tressel) is a rigid frame used as a support, especially referring to a bridge composed of a number of short spans supported by such frames. In the context of trestle bridges, each supporting frame is generally referred to as a bent. Timber and iron trestles were extensively used in the 19th century, the former making up from 1 to 3% of the total length of the average railroad.[1] In the 21st century, steel and sometimes concrete trestles are commonly used to bridge particularly deep valleys while timber trestles remain common in certain areas. Tellico Reservoir, also known as Tellico Lake, is a reservoir in Tennessee, created by the Tennessee Valley Authority in 1979 upon the completion of Tellico Dam. The dam impounds the Little Tennessee River and the lower Tellico River. ( Wikipedia )
I remember when this area became a lake. The TVA bought up a lot of land from farmers and other land owners. After the dam was finished, many land owners all of the sudden had lake front properties.
Fast forward 36 years, this area now has major developments with beautiful homes, golf courses, marina’s and restaurants. Just a few years ago it was named the #1 retirement area in the country. Located in the foothills of the Smokies is another added bonus.
On the lake a swimsuit is a must, but you might stop off for lunch at one of the many great restaurants located around the lakes and a beautiful Kaftan/Caftan (whatever you want to call it) is the perfect coverup.
