I’ve been traveling to Telluride, Colorado for over 25 years now and have stayed at several different places over the decades, but every single time I return, it feels like stepping straight into a living postcard! Whether you’re shopping for a place to stay this winter or planning your next summer getaway from chasing peak golden aspen foliage in mid-September to carving down powder on world-class ski slopes Telluride holds a truly magical place in my heart.

If you’re planning a family vacation, a cozy romantic getaway, or a memorable girls’ trip, here is my refreshed guide on where to stay, eat, and play in Telluride!

Where to Stay in Telluride

Telluride offers two main hubs connected by a scenic, free gondola ride, historic Downtown Telluride and the mountain-chic Mountain Village (founded in 1995 at 9,500 feet in elevation with its stunning European-inspired architecture).

Madeline Hotel & Residences (Auberge Resorts Collection)

Located right in the heart of Mountain Village, this remains my absolute favorite luxury base. We first heard about The Madeline Hotel through a good friend who managed the property, and from the moment we drove under the porte-cochère, we were treated like family! It gives you that warm, intimate feel combined with 5-star amenities including slope-side ski valet, a world-class salon and spa, 24-hour room service, and spacious rooms overlooking the town plaza.

You are steps away from the gondola, local coffee spots, boutiques, and the iconic Sky Terrace where catching the sunset over the fire pits with a cocktail in hand is a total must. If you’re looking to invest in a mountain retreat, the Madeline Residences offer that ultimate princess lifestyle with 5-star pampering and total lock-and-leave freedom!

The Peaks Resort & Spa

We have enjoyed The Peaks for many years. Ski in and ski out. Fantastic for family getaways, featuring Colorado’s largest spa, indoor/outdoor pools, and stunning mountain views.

New Sheridan Hotel

Telluride’s most famous hotel. Stay in the Heart of Telluride in this historical boutique hotel in the heart of town with trails and shopping only steps away.

Ice House Suites and Condominiums

Norman and I have stayed here many times. On San Juan Avenue in downtown Telluride, this stay sits in a box canyon surrounded by the San Juan mountain range. Reset after the slopes in an indoor-outdoor pool, large hot tub, and eucalyptus steam room. Use the covered parking garage and the dedicated ski and bike storage for easy gear days. Walk to your favorite restaurants, coffee shop and shopping. It is not a full-service hotel but has a kitchenette, which we loved for stocking up on drinks, easy meals, and snacks.

Hotel Telluride

A charming, alpine-chic boutique hotel nestled in town, perfect if you prefer a quieter stay with easy walking access to Main Street shopping.

Lumière By Dunton

Tucked away in Mountain Village, this boutique gem offers intimate, residential-style luxury ideal for a girls’ getaway or private family retreat.

Where to Eat & Sip

Black Iron Kitchen & Bar

Located right at The Madeline, this indoor/outdoor spot serves delicious gourmet burgers, sliders, and fresh salads with a lively ambiance overlooking the commons plaza.

Allred’s Restaurant

Perched at 10,500 feet atop the free gondola, this is Telluride’s premier fine-dining experience paired with breathtaking, panoramic mountain sunsets.

221 South Oak

Located inside a historic home in town, Chef Eliza Gavin serves exquisite seasonal farm-to-table dishes with outstanding wine pairings.

The Chop House & Wine Bar

Since 1895, Telluride’s premier restaurant located in the New Sheridan Hotel, the Chop House & Wine Bar, is a classic “steak house” with traditions of mountain western game along with western aged beef and bison.

The curated wine list of regional US and acclaimed wines from around the globe – many also available at our nitrogen wine bar.

La Marmotte

A French Bistro next door to the Ice House. Can I say DELICIOUS! La Marmotte is housed in what was once the old icehouse for the Town of Telluride. The building has been exquisitely restored to provide a quaint and cozy dining experience. Many years ago, we dined right next to Billy Joel.

The Butcher & The Baker

The go-to morning spot for organic pastries, artisanal coffee, and fresh breakfast sandwiches before hitting the trails.

The Madeline Salon, Spa and Fitness Center , one of the only 2 full service spas in Telluride, makes this stay very convenient to relax and pamper. I love a great hike or a day of snow skiing and then off to the spa for a world class treatment. Also, if I need a mani/pedi or a fresh makeover, then voila. Done!! The new addition a couple of years ago of the Sky Terrace is my favorite spot on the property. You can surely guess why it is so special. The sunsets here are the best on the mountain.

You can see the fire pits located here. They make for a great meet and greet with the other hotel and residence guests and enjoy the cool summer mountain evenings. This is why so many people come here from Texas in the summer, to escape the heat. The Black Kitchen and Bar is an inside outside restaurant that is part of the hotel, and I might add has the best food. It overlooks the commons area, making the ambiance second to none. We ate there on a couple of occasions where we had sliders, burgers, and salads that were delicious. Wish I could order up a little Black Iron Kitchen and Bar right now.

Summer & Fall (June – October)

Summer Recreation & Family Fun: Even though I am an accomplished skier, I actually love summers in Colorado best! Mountain Village is the ultimate playground for all ages, featuring festivals, outdoor events, and recreational play areas with a fun grassy hill kids love rolling down. Hiking, mountain biking, rafting, and fly fishing are my absolute favorite outdoor summer activities here.

Mid-September Golden Hour: If you can visit during mid-to-late September, do it! The quaking aspen leaves turn brilliant shades of gold across the entire canyon.

Festival Season: Summer brings iconic world-class events to town, including the Telluride Bluegrass Festival and Telluride Film Festival.

Winter (December – April)

World-Class Skiing: Telluride Ski Resort is famous for uncrowded slopes, breathtaking vertical drops, and terrain suited for every skill level.

Apres-Ski & Pampering: Spend the morning on the slopes and the afternoon unwinding with a spa treatment at The Madeline Spa or relaxing around the outdoor fire pits to escape the heat and soak in the crisp mountain air.

Getting to Telluride | Flights & Ground Transportation

Getting to Telluride is easier than ever with great flight and shuttle options!

1. Which Airport & Airline to Take

Montrose Regional Airport (MTJ): The primary airport for visiting Telluride (an easy 80-minute scenic drive away). It offers commercial nonstop flights on major carriers including United Airlines, American Airlines, Delta, and Southwest Airlines from major hubs like Dallas (DFW), Houston (IAH), Denver (DEN), Chicago (ORD), Phoenix (PHX), Atlanta (ATL), and Los Angeles (LAX).
Telluride Regional Airport (TEX): Located just 10 minutes from town! Denver Air Connection (partnered with United) operates direct regional jet service into TEX from Denver (DEN) and Phoenix (PHX).

2. Renting a Car vs. Airport Shuttles

Airport Shuttles (Recommended): Booking a professional shuttle (like Telluride Express or Mountain Limo) or a private luxury car service is the most stress-free option. Once you arrive in Telluride, you don’t even need a car thanks to the free pedestrian Gondola and local shuttle buses!
Car Rental: Major rental car companies (Avis, Hertz, Enterprise, Budget) are available at Montrose (MTJ) if you plan on doing extended road trips through Southwestern Colorado.
Uber & Lyft Warning: Do not rely on ride-share apps! Uber and Lyft are extremely scarce to nonexistent in the mountains, and ride-shares are not authorized for pickup at TEX airport. Stick to pre-booked airport shuttles or rentals instead.
