August is National Health Awareness Month, a time dedicated to prioritizing our well-being and reflecting on the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. As we enter the latter half of the year, this month serves as a timely reminder to assess our physical, mental, and emotional health.  

I have always believed in taking care of our bodies, but as I have gotten older, I understand the importance even more. As we age, taking care of our health becomes increasingly important to ensure a higher quality of life and longevity. Our bodies change over time, making it crucial to adopt healthy habits that support physical strength, mental clarity, and emotional well-being. By prioritizing regular exercise, balanced nutrition, managing stress, and preventive care, we can better manage the challenges of aging and maintain our independence and vitality well into our later years.

For aging women like myself, exercise is especially important as it helps counteract the natural decline in muscle mass, bone density, and flexibility that occurs with age. Regular physical activity can significantly reduce the risk of osteoporosis, heart disease, and other age-related conditions. It also plays a crucial role in maintaining balance and coordination, reducing the likelihood of falls and injuries.

Beyond the physical benefits, exercise supports mental health by alleviating symptoms of anxiety and depression, promoting cognitive function, and enhancing overall quality of life. By staying active, aging women can maintain their independence, strength, and vitality well into their later years. My favorite way to exercise is Pilates, swimming, or a long walk with my dog Pippa and a walk is also good for her at 12 years old.

Quality nutrition is fundamental to maintaining overall health. It’s a goal of mine to make sure I am nourishing myself with nutrient-dense foods that fuel my body and ensure I am building a healthy foundation.  Check out my famous guacamole recipe here in this blog post. I don’t exactly like to cook but when I do it is pretty darn healthy and good!! I made this beautiful fruit charcuterie board and as you can tell from the photo, I was very proud of myself!!

Also, not only do I try to eat healthy, I add in a daily serving of Orgain Collagen Peptides + Probiotics Norman likes the powder but I like the capsules from Ancient Nutrition.

Sleep is so crucial to our health and I struggle so hard with this one. For midlife women, getting enough sleep is one of the most important things for our overall health and well-being. Quality sleep helps regulate hormones, supports cognitive function, and strengthens the immune system, all of which become increasingly important as we age. Adequate rest also aids in managing stress and maintaining a healthy weight, while reducing the risk of chronic conditions such as heart disease and diabetes.

Prioritizing sleep allows midlife women to wake up refreshed, energized, and better equipped to handle the demands of daily life. If you are over 60 and if you can get 8 hours of sleep every night, then you are blessed!!

So how do we get a good night’s sleep? I don’t know…..I am still trying to figure it out. I am not a fan of melatonin or PM products even though I do take them on occasion but I do know a great mattress and good pillow is a good start.

I am so happy it is National Health Awareness Month and that this month is a reminder and encourages us to make small, sustainable changes that can lead to long-term wellness. Whether you’re just beginning your health journey or looking to refine your routine, August is the perfect time to focus on creating a healthier, happier you.
